Awaken your spirit and connect with our talented community as we celebrate art and creativity together.

We will begin with an introduction from Beth Tzedec's artist-in-residence, Aviva Chernick, and then participants will be invited to join breakout groups based on their own creative interests. Please explore the sessions below - all levels of experience and artistic skill are welcome!

As you select each session, the program description will appear below. Read through to learn more about the artists leading the sessions and the necessary materials you'll need to have on hand.

A Niggun at Play: Singing with Ellen Rosenbluth

Are you moved by melodies? Do you enjoy singing – even just in the shower? At this workshop we will learn a beautiful niggun (a Jewish wordless melody) and then play around with it to explore the tune and how we each connect with it.

About Ellen Rosenbluth
A policy wonk by profession, Ellen is a life-long lover of Jewish music, particularly Hassidic niggunim and their role in participatory prayer. She and her husband have a klezmer band called Rock the Shtetl that, once upon a pre-pandemic time, played weekly at Baycrest and at weddings, community events and smahot. Ellen is looking forward to a musical future for all of us!

Leaning into Blessing: Prose and Poetry with Lorne Blumer

One of Judaism’s great gifts is its abundance of blessings, inviting us to connect with gratitude throughout our day. In this workshop, we will focus on Birkot HaShachar, or morning blessings, giving expression to their role in our lives through prose and poetry, whichever you prefer. Whatever your knowledge (or lack of it) of Jewish prayer and Hebrew, you have much to contribute!

About Lorne Blumer
Lorne Blumer is a graduate of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality's program in Jewish Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training. He blogs in the form of spiritual reportage, meditates, leads Jewish contemplative practice, and from time to time, practices what he preaches.

Kol HaNeshama: Exploring our Heritage in Song with Arieh Sacke

In this workshop, we will delve into the rich song tradition that has nurtured centuries of Jewish existence. Together, we will explore the elements of the singer’s breath, we will cast light on the poetry and music of the piyyut (Jewish liturgical poem), and of course, we will unite in singing.

About Arieh Sacke
Having begun his musical journey in the rich liturgical tradition of Morocco, Arieh Sacke is now entering the second year of his Master’s in Voice Performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
